What makes German hard for English speakers, and what does not

English and German are close relatives. Around a third of everyday German words have an English cousin you will recognise on sight: Haus, Wasser, Freund, trinken, Winter. Reading German is easier than most people expect. The difficulties are elsewhere, and they are the same for almost every English speaker.

Three words for "the"

German nouns are masculine, feminine or neuter: der Tisch, die Lampe, das Fenster. There is no full logic, but there are endings that predict the article in about eight out of ten cases. Learn nouns with their article from day one and the problem shrinks fast. The ending rules are in Der, die, das: how to guess the right article most of the time.

Four cases

English still has a trace of cases in he, him, his. German applies the same idea to articles and adjectives: der Mann, den Mann, dem Mann, des Mannes. It looks like a wall of tables. The verb at the end

In a subordinate clause the verb moves to the end: Ich weiß, dass er morgen kommt means "I know that he tomorrow comes". English speakers feel they have to hold their breath until the sentence closes. It becomes automatic after a few weeks of listening. Sounds English does not have

The ch in ich and Buch, the rounded vowels ü and ö, and the German r are the sounds that mark an English accent. None of them is difficult once someone shows you where the tongue goes. False friends
